Loved this new book by Nat Burns. I think I've read all her books at this point!! One of the things I enjoyed about this story is how Ms. Burns gave us a great deal of information/back-story on the two leading characters. With this information, I became more invested in seeing how these two women are finally brought together through their individual strengths, and as a couple trying to find their way toward each other. Additionally, Ms. Burns has a real gift for transporting me to the bayou country - the people, the water, all manner of life around the bayou, the sights and even the smells. For someone living in the desert of the Southwest, it was a welcome experience to be transported to this part of the country. I highly recommend this book, and any book by Nat Burns.I'm really hoping there will be a prequel to this story that focuses on the people living in the bayou, and magic it contains.

I was captivated by the author's ability to capture a certain place at a certain time ... to understand and write believably about a little known diverse culture. In addition, the heroic figures were very believable and admirable, even or perhaps because of their flaws. I grew to consider them valued friends and wish they could be a part of my real life.
Slide in slow, feel the bayou seep into your bones, as you come to know the people of Redstar. Folks understand life differently here, with an acceptance of the pain that walks alongside joy. Nat Burns takes the reader deep into both setting and character, leaving a lasting presence. Burns truly makes setting a character in Nether Regions. You will feel the sun and water, smell the herb garden as well as the bar, and know the heaviness of southern, summer heat. A variety of characters all tell you their own stories, while supporting those of the protagonists. As you read, you will experience blissful peace, laughter, horrific tragedy, fear, and hope. No matter what storm rolls through, there is always hope and new life.
